Infected Finger

Recently, while I was in Timor Leste, a country that you should look up, I got a hangnail. Thinking nothing about it, I pulled it off, like I usually do. However, little did I realize that little germs got in when I pulled my hangnail, and my finger was infected pretty soon.

On our way back, it popped and pus swam out of it. So when we got home we didn’t do anything about it - until my dad said he wanted to see it. When he looked at it, he said, “This is pretty bad.” To make the story short, my dad ended up pushing my skin back to give the pus a way to escape. It hurt really badly, but he put me on antibiotics (my parents are doctors) and told me to swallow them down faithfully!

I wish I could say I was faithful in taking the antibiotics. But I really hated swallowing them every morning, and it was hard to remember, even when my family reminded me! Eventually, I forgot so much that I just quit. I decided that my finger was better so I didn’t need to take my antibiotics. I could play the violin and piano again (it had hurt too much before), I could type fast again on the computer, and everything was normal.

But one day, I found my finger was hurting again. My dad told me that my finger was getting infected again and that I needed to start the antibiotics again, and this time COMPLETE them. And so I started the antibiotics again, and of course, my finger got better.

This may be a silly story about an infected finger, but there is a lesson we can learn from it. The germs represent Satan and his evil angels, the finger represents me, and the antibiotics represent God’s word. Satan wants to get into our hearts and control us. When he comes in, he makes our lives miserable, like my life was when I had the infected finger. But to keep him from living in our minds and hearts, we need to ask Jesus to cleanse us, like when my dad pushed my skin back to let all the pus (sin) out. After Satan is gone, we must read God’s word faithfully, every day, to keep him from coming back again! Even when we’re tired or when we don’t feel like reading our bibles - WE NEED TO!!! We need to keep Satan from coming back again!
